When I was a “nobody”, just a weird, curly-haired, awkwardly skinny girl without many friends, I was so insecure and an easy target for teasing and harassment.
Then I made friends and experimented with alcohol and drugs, which honestly made me feel worse about myself and I became more lost. It often felt like a quick escape to nowhere.
When I began on a Spiritual path, I was ready to be responsible for how I wanted my life to look, and how I wanted to feel about myself. I took back my power, I learned who I was, who I was meant to be, and for the first time I accepted myself as a beautiful human being.
If you’ve read my past blog posts, you know I’ve overcome many of my insecurities. You may have even wondered WHY or HOW I could have been insecure. Truth is, we all have insecurities and the reason we’re experiencing them is because of the world we live in now. It’s because the world we live in and have grown up in, is not based on LOVE, even though it’s who we are at the core.
Accepting myself was a pretty cool experience. I made sense. I knew that the images and curious thoughts I had as a child of being a leader, were real and I could acknowledge them. I didn’t know how I was going to become a leader, I just knew I was meant to be one.
So how does one achieve their dreams and rise above all the negativity that is constantly being thrown at us, by the media, our so-called “friends” and even by our family?
It takes absolute faith that you’re meant to live a great life! It takes positive reinforcement, as much as possible, even if a daily reminder is needed. It takes courage, lots of courage. It takes strength because you will need to overcome so much resistance, especially from the people you consider closest to you. And you will need strength to move forward even when you feel you can’t do it, take it or rise anymore.
As you travel on your path, you will encounter bullies, you will encounter nay-sayers, you will encounter people who wear “masks”; they will say one thing and do another. You will have friends who are attracted to your light, but if you become too “big”, watch out! There will be people who say they are your friends, but they just want to feed off your energy. They want to know what you can give to them. That’s what you call having a “hidden agenda.” Do not let these people interfere with your goal(s). You can tell them “thank you” and “buh-bye!”
I am sharing this all with you because I have recently experienced some wonderful acknowledgements of my work, and I’m grateful that my name has made its way into print and the media. All my effort and hard work is being recognized and I am so grateful.
At the same time, much of my enjoyment was short-lived when I excitedly shared my accomplishments with my friends and family and received less than a handful of “Congrats! We’re so happy for you! You deserve it!”
Did I have the expectation that my friends & family would be happy for me? Yes. Especially when I’ve always been a proud and generous supporter of their dreams being fulfilled. For me, this was a reality-check. This showed me that I really just need to do ME, and let others take care of themselves. Everybody is wrapped up in their own lives anyway, and if they are not taking steps to succeed on their own path, they won’t be a support for you on yours. It’s just a reminder to keep going. At the same time, I will be protective of what I share and with whom I share my happy news. It’s important for me to keep my energy clear of negativity, as I am already very sensitive and can feel the icky stuff.
So, at the end of the day, your path to success is YOUR path. However it works, however it feels, and however a measure of success looks for you, honor that. Just remember that you do deserve success even if people are unwilling to celebrate with you. Keep going!
